Flashback Friday - Mostly Inappropriate

I've seen a lot of buzz today about Katy Perry's would-be appearance on Sesame Street.  I won't dwell on that, other than to say the obvious; she was dressed inappropriately.  (Though, honestly, isn't that a bit like inviting Madonna on Sesame Street in the 80's and expecting her to show up in something other than one of those cone-shaped bras?  I feel myself digressing...must stop now.)

There are a lot of things that are inappropriate in children's television that haven't garnered a fraction of the attention the Katy Perry thing has (which ultimately won't even air and is being propagated by social networking...and now...my own blog).

For example, how do you feel about the Ninja Turtles asking, "What the shell?!"

Our kids are inundated with this garbage and it's our job as parents to decide whether to let them be exposed and explain the implications or to shelter them from it for as long as humanly possible.  If you choose the latter, let me just warn you that it is becoming increasingly more difficult to do.

A few weeks ago (in case you're wondering - this is the "flashback" part - it's a stretch, I know), I took this photo on a trip to a children's museum.  Four or five parents were gathered around this play-like freezer, discussing the contents.  Naturally (because I'm nosy), I had to see what they were talking about.

Yup.  That's a man's head frozen in a block of ice.

I would be lying if I said it didn't make me chuckle a little bit.  Then I remembered the audience.  We were in a children's museum.  The thing is - the kids were way too busy playing in the giant maze of crawl-through tubes behind this to even notice the contents of some lame freezer.

I'm not sure how I'm supposed to feel about this, to be honest.  Perhaps you all can tell me what you think.

That's all I've got this Friday.  And I consider it a success that I had even that much.  I feel a little bit like my head has been in a freezer all week.

Happy Fall, Y'all!  Have a fabulous weekend!

Jennie,
You know what? I'm with you! Though my "kids" are well into their 20's now, the three of us often discuss how inappropriate television is becoming. Even THEY are appalled at what gets shown and said. The trend I'm also noticing (that scares the pants off me - wait, THAT would be inappropriate!) - where was I? Oh yeah, the scary trend is this whole "vampire" thing. Honestly, has it escaped someone's attention that vampires are the "living dead" - they're not real, and even if they were, they shouldn't be objects of adoration or teenage crushes? They're, ummm, EVIL!! YIKES! And don't get me started on movies that are focused on horror-full, demonic stuff - and they're rated PG-13! I WON'T GO to a movie like that! It's getting tougher and tougher to be a parent in this world, especially with young ones. My hat's off to you (and I'll throw some prayers your way, too!!)

GOD BLESS YOU, Jennie - enjoyed this post.

(OK, I laughed too, at the head in the freezer - but I agree, not the best thing in a children's museum...!)

I have to second Sharon's views on the whole vampire trend...not something I want my kids following. It makes me feel old to complain about what's on tv but it can't be helped!! And the head in the freezer made me smile too:)

Why doesn't it surprise me that Sharon Kirby laughed at the frozen head?

Probably for the same reason that I am not surprised to agree with YOU yet again and agree with both of you regarding the "stuff" that's out there.

I agree about the inappropriateness. I'm frankly saddened by the parents who let it whiz right by. I agree about the vampire and demon thing too.

I just typed a longwinded comment that ended up with that frog in the pot analogy but decided to let your words stand just as they are.

What ever happened to sweetness?

Thank you ladies for understanding where I'm coming from.

Chrystal, I feel "old" too! I guess, at least, we're in it together!

I completely agree that the vampire thing is just downright bizarre. I got really upset because Burger King had Twilight "toys" in their kids meals over the summer. I know they're at least PG-13, how can the conscionably market that to the Happy Meal demographic? NOT COOL, Burger King.

Whenever someone comments on the nature of television today, there is *always* the person who cites Looney Toons as the original inappropriate children's show, and it's almost infuriating to me. That's going to be a tough sell, if you want to get me on board with that.

Jennie,

One of the many things I love about you is that I always learn a few things on your blog. I think I lead a sheltered life! The dress was totally inappropriate -- but I do like the song. I think the head and the vampires are even more disturbing. And I hate it that we constantly have to fight to protect our children's innocence.

I love the analogy about Madonna and her cone bra! Perfect. Oh, but you digressed....

I just feel like there is WAY more stuff on TV that's questionable for kids than back in "my" day! Hubs and I feel like our finger is always on the remote button. And my kids are 12 and 16.

I didn't know the Ninja Turtles said that! Man...
